She said: “With cases of the Delta variant rising rapidly in Sunderland along with the rest of the region, it’s more important than ever to get vaccinated and to take up both doses of the vaccine. A recent study has shown that having two doses is highly effective against the Delta strain.

"Being vaccinated continues to offer the best form of protection against Covid, so it’s vital that if you haven’t had your first dose of the vaccine yet, you sign up for it now at: www.nhs.uk/coronavirus and when you get your invitation to go for your second dose, you take this up at the earliest opportunity. "

More than 150 new covid cases were recorded in Sunderland on Sunday, the highest numbers since January.

The health chief continues to urge people of Sunderland to follow basic guidance around hands, face, space and fresh air.
