COVID RECAP: as Matt Hancock confirms Sunderland, South Tyneside, Hartlepool and rest of North East will remain in Tier 3

People have been urged to scale back its Christmas festivities as health leaders warned the Government not to move areas out of Tier 3 measures “prematurely”.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock is due to announce the outcome of the Government’s review of the Tiered system today (Thursday, December 17).

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson told MPs that the four UK nations have agreed to continue “in principle” with the easing of coronavirus restrictions over Christmas.

Tier restrictions were reviewed on Wednesday, December 16, and an announcement is expected later this morning.

The North East is waiting to hear if it will remain in Tier 3 – the toughest restrictions.

Tier 3 restrictions means pubs, cafes and restaurants must remain closed, except for takeaway. Households are not allowed to mix indoors or in private gardens.
