Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick confirms further local lockdown restrictions to be imposed across the North East from Friday

The rapid rise in the number of coronavirus cases across the North East will see further restrictions imposed in the region from Friday.

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick confirmed that a decision has been made to tighten restrictions across the North East.

This comes as a further 278 cases of coronavirus were confirmed across the North East on Wednesday, September 16 with the total number of cases in the region standing at 18.963.

In Sunderland, the number of confirmed cases in the city rose by 40 to 2,319 according to the latest figures released by the Public Health England on Wednesday.

South Tyneside had a further 36 cases recorded with the borough’s total now standing at 1,293. The number of cases in Hartlepool rose by 12 to 756 and Northumberland saw a rise of 25 to 1,851.

The rising rate of cases in the region will see further lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures introduced from midnight on Thursday evening.

Speaking on ITV’s Peston on Wednesday, Mr Jenrick commented: “The number of cases has been rising rapidly in many parts of the country, but in particular in the North East, and so a decision has been made to impose further restrictions there.

“And a full announcement will be made tomorrow and so people living in that part of the country should watch out for that. And the measures will come into play at midnight on Thursday evening.

“So, over the course of the day a full briefing will be made available to everybody including the councils and business community.”
