Almost two fifths of people get jab in Sunderland

Nearly two fifths of people in Sunderland have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, new figures reveal.

NHS data shows 98,853 people had received a vaccine jab by March 7 ­– equating to 43% of those aged 16 and over, according to the latest population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

Of those vaccinated, 64,409 were aged 60 or over – 88% of the age group.

It means 34,444 people aged between 16 and 59 have received a first dose of the vaccine.

The data also reveals variation in coverage between different areas.

Areas with the highest coverage are Herrington & Doxford, with 56.4% of people aged 16 and over given their first dose, Hall Farm (51.3%) and Hill View & Tunstall (50.9%)

Areas with the lowest coverage are Sunderland Central & Deptford (25.7%) Millfield (32.6%) and Concord and Sulgrave (36.2%)

The Government has pledged to offer vaccinations to everyone aged over 50 by the end of April.
