19 Sunderland areas with the highest Covid rates as weekly cases double in city after Christmas

Areas in and around Sunderland have seen a sudden surge in Covid cases in the week after Christmas as spread of new variant causes third national lockdown.

These are the 19 areas in and around Wearside with the highest Covid case rates recorded between Thursday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 30, according to official figures.

In the seven-day period, 1,113 confirmed cases were confirmed in Sunderland – which is up by 559 compared to the week before.

The case rate takes into account the number of people living in each area compared to the number of people who have tested positive for the virus and are measured by 100,000 people.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). Pictures are for illustrative purposes only.
