14 areas in and around Sunderland with the highest Covid infection rates

Latest figures show Sunderland still has the highest Covid case rates out of the LA7 – these are the areas with the most positive cases.

These are the 14 areas in and around Wearside with the highest Covid case rates recorded between Wednesday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 26, according to official figures.

In the seven-day period, 868 confirmed cases were confirmed in Sunderland – which is down from 1,069 the week before.

Sunderland still has the highest Covid case rate out of seven North East local authorities – ahead of Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham, South Tyneside and North Tyneside.

Speaking to the Echo last month, Sunderland’s director of public health says residents are following guidance but there is ‘no clear picture’ as to why the city has the highest weekly rate of infection.

The case rate takes into account the number of people living in each area compared to the number of people who have tested positive for the virus and are measured by 100,000 people.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). Pictures are for illustrative purposes only.
