Bid to open specialist care home for children and young people in Sunderland
A specialist care home for children and young people with autism could be opened in Sunderland.
Community interest company Include In Autism wants to convert Highgate Cottage, off Durham Road, in the Barnes area of the city, into a permanent residential home for up to two children aged five to 17 with autism and additional needs.

A submitted management plan confirms the detached bungalow would operate as a “family-style residential home”.
The proposed home, which would be regulated by Ofsted, would operate on a 24-hour basis with appropriately trained staff available at all times.
Staffing levels would be determined by the assessed needs of the children and visits would normally take place by prior arrangement.
The application argues that the “combination of low occupancy, continuous staff supervision, carefully matched placements, structured operational procedures and proactive management will ensure the home operates harmoniously within the surrounding residential area”.
An accompanying design and access statement adds the development will create a “valuable community asset” and provide much-needed specialist accommodation for young people with autism in a safe and supportive residential setting.
Other listed benefits included supporting children and young people to improve their health, wellbeing, stability, independence and quality of life, whilst also providing support for families and carers.
The design and access statement adds: “The proposal will enhance the appearance and long-term viability of the existing property through sensitive refurbishment, ensuring it continues to contribute positively to the surrounding residential area.
“Appropriate off-street parking is provided within the secure gated site.”
A decision on the plan is expected following a consultation.
