Thornhill Academy in Sunderland will open on Wednesday following two-day closure

Thornhill Academy, in Thornholme Road, will reopen on Wednesday after engineers spent two days repairing the heating system which failed on Sunday night.

The temperature was just 12C inside the school building on Monday morning which forced the school to close for two days so the necessary work could be carried out.

A fractured boiler has been repaired and a new expansion vessel and corroded underfloor pipe have been installed.

A spokesman for the academy said: “We are pleased to inform all parents and pupils that our heating issues have been resolved. School will be open as normal to all staff and pupils tomorrow. Thanks for your on-going support.”

On Monday evening, the school moved to reassure parents that the only reason the school was closed was due to the heating.
