Sunderland primary school teachers go the extra mile to visit pupils during lockdown

Staff from a Sunderland primary school have hit the road to catch up with pupils during lockdown.

Teachers from Redby Academy in Fulwell, have been keeping in touch with pupils while the school has been closed to all but the children of key workers over the past few months.

But this week has seen a home visit for every child, allowing class teachers to personally handover end of year schools report and a small gift for each pupil.

Children were delighted to spend a few moments on their doorsteps with their teacher.

Donna Pearey, mum to six-year-old Joseph, said the school had been ‘amazing’ throughout lockdown and she had found accessing weekly work on the school website easy.

Early Years Leader Cheryl Morris visited the home of Manish Thushyanth, whose proud parents were impressed by the work provided by staff at Redby and delighted both four-year-old Manish, and older bother Harish, 10, had been kept busy throughout lockdown.

Headteacher Melanie Wight said she had been extremely impressed by the way children and families had coped during such a difficult period and also paid tribute to the efforts of the staff.

"A number of parents have remarked that they would not have managed to work without the support of the school,” she said.

"As well as remote learning tasks, teachers have also carried out Google Classroom meetings so that children could chat to their friends and teachers at the same time.

“We are very much looking forward to September, and having the entire Redby family back together.”
