Another 13 students have tested positive for coronavirus at the University of Sunderland

A further 13 students at the University of Sunderland have tested positive for Covid-19 within the last seven days.

The University of Sunderland has seen 13 new cases of coronavirus in the seven days leading to do October 28.

The new cases only relate to students, with the the university confirming no further cases among staff.

It means that the total number of cases recorded at the University of Sunderland now stands at 137.

Since term began at the end of September, 124 students and 13 staff have tested positive and needed to self-isolate.

A spokesperson for the university said: “In the past seven days to 28 October there have been 13 new positive Covid-19 cases in students at the University of Sunderland. There are no new staff cases.”

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the majority of cases were centred around student accommodation, with online teaching being stepped up to ensure learning isn’t affected.

Those who have been in close contact with students who tested positive were contacted by the university.

On October 14, a spokesperson for the University of Sunderland commented: “All of those affected continue to receive university support and cases are being managed according to public health requirements.

“This is thanks to the consideration of our students and staff who continue to follow our ‘safe campus’ guidance, for which we are grateful.”

It comes as the University updated its student code of conduct policy to include rules on coronavirus and social distancing.

Students in breach of the students code could face disciplinary action.
