Work begins on huge Washington delivery warehouse set to create 125 new DPD jobs
More than 100 jobs are set to be created with the opening of a new distribution centre in Washington.
Commercial property specialists Buccleuch Property and Argon Properties have begun developing a new 60,000 sq. ft. storage and distribution unit for leading parcel delivery service DPD at their Velocity site in the New Town.
The unit will sit on a 10-acre brownfield site in the Armstrong Industrial Estate which has been undeveloped for more than 25 years.
The firm says the building will help to address a shortage of distribution space in the region and is expected to create 125 jobs for DPD.
Contractor Parkway Construction has already begun work on site and completion is due in early 2022.
Neil Finnie, Director at Buccleuch Property said: “This is a great example of positive reuse of a brownfield site to create significant investment and new jobs.
"We look forward to working with DPD to create a state of the art distribution centre”.
Louise Ferguson, General Manager for DPD said the new site represented ‘a significant additional investment in our network, which is made up of 84 depots throughout the UK’.
"This additional depot will ensure we are able to continue to provide the best possible delivery service to customers living in the area following the continued growth in demand for our services and of course also brings much needed jobs to the area,” she said.
Richard Wilks, Managing Director at Argon Properties, said the firm was delighted to be bringing new work to the region: “As a North East-based developer, it is fantastic to be involved in securing long term jobs for the area and redeveloping a site that has been vacant for so long.”
