But where’s the best place to stay in the city?
We took a look at Google reviews to see which permanent hotels and guest houses ranked highly (seasonal holiday homes excluded).
Here’s what comes up in the top 10, from convenient city centre locations to spots with a sea view.

1. The Beach House at One Roker Terrace, 5
It may be a relative newcomer to the city's overnight stay offering at a year old, but The Beach House at One Roker Terrace already has a perfect score of 5 on Google reviews - and has even been recommended by Time Out magazine. An occasion house, which can be booked by the room or as a whole house let, it offers stunning views of Roker Pier and bespoke stays. One reviewer said: "Such a beautiful hotel. Restored with some original features and lots of quirky touches. Couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. Room (Sky Loft) was excellent with everything you need and spotlessly clean. Postcard views from the windows." | Sunderland Echo

4. Boar's Head Hotel, East End, 4.5
Boar's Head Hotel has been praised for being off the beaten path. Housed upstairs in one of the city's oldest pubs, its accommodation offering has a rating of 4.5. One guest said:" I wanted a solo getaway but not in the city. This was a really good little gem. It looks odd from the outside but it's really pretty inside. The way I would describe this place is it would be like visiting your Aunties place. Laid back, quiet, casual, make yourself at home but a couple of boundaries too :) Breakfast was interesting. I've never helped myself to someone's kitchen before but it felt really homely. The rooms were clean and quiet. Everything you needed. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting something a bit different from the rest." | Sunderland Echo
