These are the best pubs in the North East, according to the Good Pub Guide 2021.
The guide rates pubs not only on the standard and range of their ales and beers but on food, atmosphere, facilities and quality of service and welcome.

1. The Steamboat, South Shields
"Friendly 19th-c pub on cobbled corner with nine well kept oft-changing ales plus craft ales from near and far, a real cider and a wide and expanding range of spirits including 50 rums, snacks only plus coffee at quiet times," says the guide. Photo: Stu Norton

2. The Tanners Arms. Alnwick
"Welcoming little drinkers’ pub," reckons the guide, "with five well kept local ales and a decent glass of wine; flagstones and stripped stone." Photo: Jane Coltman

3. The Victoria, Durham
"Close to the historic centre of Durham, this traditional family-run inn not only makes a great base for exploring the city but is well worth a visit in its own right," says the guide. "The original Victorian décor is still intact and it remains charming and unspoilt – just how the long-serving, attentive owners like it." Pic: Google Images Photo: kc

Named one of the guide's top ten pubs of the year: "This is a lovely, handsome old inn standing next to St Romald’s Church on the edge of the village green – you can see the original stocks and waterpump from the picnic-sets out front. "The beamed bar area has old-fashioned seats facing a warming log fire, a Jacobean oak settle, a grandfather clock, brass hunting horns and old farm tools and black and white pictures of Romaldkirk on the walls."
