It follows the announcement from the department store chain on Tuesday, December 1 that rescue talks with JD Sports had broken down, putting 12,000 jobs at risk.

The high street retailer said its administrators have “regretfully” decided to start winding down operations while continuing to seek offers “for all or parts of the business”.

From tomorrow (December 2), non-essential shops will reopen across England with the centre director for The Bridges, Karen Eve, urging Christmas shoppers to make use of Debenhams.

She said: “The Bridges Shopping Centre is working with administrators for Debenhams and recognises there may be uncertain times ahead.

"The economic landscape is challenging for all businesses and we would encourage customers to support their local high street when non-essential retail re-opens tomorrow.

“While safety is still a priority, there has never been a more important time for people to shop locally, which protects both jobs and businesses across the city."

The 242-year-old retail chain’s 124 UK stores will continue to trade until along with online purchases to clear the current and contracted stocks.

Debenhams entered administration in April and has already cut 6,500 jobs so far this year – including the closure of the Metro Centre branch in June.
