Poundland has insisted that the sex toys are only top shelves only and are kept out of the way of children’s toys, however when an Echo reporter visited the branch this week the items were on the same aisles as the children’s toys.

A Poundland spokesperson said: “The new items in our range are merchandised in our valentines range, not next to children’s toys, on top shelves only.

"We know not everything we offer is to everyone’s tastes, but this range is very popular with many of our customers.”

The adult toys are part of Poundland's “The Nooky” range, which is on sale as part of the company’s Valentines offering – and has been for the last three years.

The budget retail chain have acknowledged on their customer service website that not everyone is a fan of the range and have encouraged offended customers to "look the other way and ignore it”.

The website said: “If you find something you personally don’t like in our stores – by all means tell us. We really want to know – because knowing what you think we’ve got wrong allows us to make things better.

"But if something’s offended you, we won’t force you to buy it either. It’s fine for you to look the other way and ignore it.

"We certainly won’t be offended by that."
