Protest held at Nissan to highlight the impact a no deal Brexit could have on the North East

Protesters stood outside of Nissan to raise awareness that about the potential impact of a no deal Brexit.

Protesters stood outside of Nissan’s Washington plant on Monday, July 20 to spread the message that a no deal Brexit could cripple the regions economy.

It follows on from a protest that took place last month, which was held to encourage the Government to extend the Brexit transition period due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

That deadline has now passed and the UK will leave the European Union on December 31 with or without a trade deal.

Louise Brown, from Washington, has explained that it was not a protest against Brexit but one of support for the region.

Spokeswoman Louise Brown says that they aren't protesting against Brexit but they are protesting against a no deal scenario.

She said: “It’s not about whether you support Brexit or not, the fact is that we are now leaving the EU regardless.

"What it is about is that I don’t think anyone wants to see us crash out without a deal so we have got to spread the message.

"We aren’t spreading fear, we are only repeating what Nissan have said about the plant not being sustainable without a trade deal.

The group made signs so passers-by could see what they are fighting for.

"They are a company, not a charity and they will go wherever they can to make the best profit.”

The group are also trying to raise awareness about the potential impact a no deal Brexit may have on Nissan’s supply chain.

Louise added: “People from across the region have told us how concerned they are about the supply chain that feeds the plant.

"Nissan saved the North East economy when previous industries closed, it will be a shame to see it ruined if they pull out. We are here to support the workers.”
