“This resumption has been made possible following extensive work at the plant to allow the safe return of our employees, with a full and comprehensive set of measures in place to protect staff.”

This comes after a pilot scheme at the end of April which saw around 50 staff working on the Powertrain line return to the plant.

The firm employs around 7,000 people at its Sunderland plant and the vast majority were placed on furlough as the coronavirus crisis hit.

Nissan has not said how many staff members will return to the production line or when but has said the return to production will be ‘phased’.

The UK government has been encouraging people who cannot work from home to return to work if possible in recent weeks as lockdown measures are eased.
