Here’s some of the local business serving up treats for the annual celebration, which this year falls on Sunday, March 27.
5. The Shipyard Girls
Buy your mum some local literature. The best-selling Shipyard Girls series is setting sail for the final time. Three Cheers for the Shipyard Girls will be the 12th and final release in the series penned by a Roker author, which regularly make the Sunday Times Bestsellers list and have sold more than half a million copies. Inspired by the hundreds of real Wearside women who kept Sunderland’s shipyards afloat during the war, Amanda Revell Walton, whose own family worked in the shipyards, began writing her novels six years ago. Three Cheers for the Shipyard Girls is published on March 31, 2022, priced £7.99 and is available at Morrisons, Asda, Sainsburys, Tesco’s, Waterstones, Amazon and Fulwell Post Office on the Sea Road, as are all the previous novels. Take mum on a trip down memory lane at the newly-opened 1950s terrace at Beamish Museum. The terrace features four new businesses: John’s Café, a recreation of the popular café from Wingate in County Durham; Middleton’s Quality Fish and Chips, a fried fish shop from Middleton St George, near Darlington; Elizabeth’s Hairdresser’s, based on an end-terrace shop from Bow Street in Middlesbrough and a recreation of the 1950s Spennymoor home of North East artist Norman Cornish. On March 27, there will also be traditional Mother's Day events running across the site. All visitors need to pre-book an entry timeslot online in advance of their visit, including Friends of Beamish members and Beamish Unlimited Pass holders at Beamish.org.uk Photo: jpi media
