It’s currently the only private, independent audiology clinic in the city, and has been opened by audiologist and hearing aid dispenser Dan Wilkinson.

Dan, who has NHS experience, has made Sunderland his home since 2015, and has chosen the city as the perfect base for his new private practice.

He said: “People who choose to go to a private, independent practice, rather than a High Street chain, often feel they get more choice, more time and a less-sales driven experience. That’s certainly what I am planning to provide.”

Dan’s clinic was officially opened on Saturday, January 8th, at Unit 21, Business Innovation Centre, Sunderland SR5 2TA, with Mayor and Mayoress Harry and Dorothy Truman officially cutting the ribbon.

As well as doing clinic appointments for hearing tests, ear wax removal and hearing aid fittings, you can also book in with his mobile clinic for those who are unable to travel or have health issues.

Why should I have a hearing test?

Dan said: “Hearing can decline as a natural process due to age, but we can also have hearing loss due to exposure to loud noise, genetics, trauma, and illness.

“Also according to Action on Hearing Loss more than 40 per cent of people over the age of 50 have a hearing loss, rising to 70 per cent of people over the age of 70.

“It is important to get your hearing tested regularly. You might not realise what you are missing out on and sometimes its friends/family that notice it first.”

Customer Sue booked Dan to look after her mother. She said: “Dan attended the nursing home my Mum lives in, she has Stage 2 Alzheimer’s and desperately needed her ears checking as she could not hear me when I telephoned her due to not being able to visit because of Covid-19.

“The manager and staff were amazing and made it safe for Dan and myself to visit. Dan has an excellent bedside manner, truly empathetic, patient and caring. On our second visit to fit her hearing aids she was not very compliant.

“But Dan was amazing! Even had my Mum laughing before we left. I would thoroughly recommend Dan at Northern Spire Hearing Services. He has greatly improved the quality of my Mums life at 89.

“10 out of 10!”
