But local residents aired their concerns over noise levels on social media and a number felt strongly enough to make formal complaints to the local authority.

"We are working to resolve these.”

Now the Langham Tower management team has apologised to people living nearby and revealed the PA system which sparked the complaints has since been removed.

"We are working with the council to overcome some issues that have affected local residents,” said a statement from the company.

"We are aware a PA system we had installed had more impact volume wise than we had realised.

"After several complaints made to us directly, we have rectified the situation by removing the PA system and the noise levels will now be within the parameter of regulated levels.

"We would like to apologise to local residents and are committed to ensuring that there will be no further issues of this nature in future."

Langham Tower had stood empty for five years after the closure of Sunderland High School before its reopening last month.

Built as a private home for William Adamson, the son of a prominent shipbuilder and shipowner, the building was once rented by the Vaux family before becoming home to Sunderland Teacher Training College in 1922, then being taken over by the then-Sunderland Polytechnic from 1975 and then the High School.

The Grade II-listed building in Ashbrooke has now been brought back to use as a multi-purpose venue and the first phase of the project has seen the opening of an outdoor bar in the grounds of the building.

The next stage will see the creation of an indoor venue for functions, weddings and corporate events, as well as a restaurant and cocktail lounge.
