Scenes of panic buying, empty shelves and queues out of supermarket doors have left people worrying about accessing food as the country goes into lockdown to help prevent the spread of the disease.

Workers at a large supermarket warehouse in Sunderland have said they are as busy as they are at Christmas trying to get stock out to all shops.

He said: "To the selfish people out there who are panic buying please stop there’s no need my fellow warehouse colleagues do this day in day out. The warehouse is full and if you stop panic buying the stores will be full too."

Mark is classed as a key worker and is continuing to work with his team round the clock to ensure food supplies for the region.

The shop steward said: "I’ve been here since 2002 and we've got the best team you could want here. The boys and girls on the shop floor are pulling out all the stops, it's as busy at Christmas here."

Supermarkets are in the list of shops exempt from closure in the lockdown measures put in place by the Government on Monday March 23.

People are being urged to stay at home as much as possible and to only go out to buy essentials including groceries, as infrequently as possible.
