Firms across the city are playing their part in the effort to protect workers and olimit spread of the disease.

Rainton Bridge-based Connor Solutions has seen a significant increase in orders from its global medical customers and is mobilising its team to ensure it is able to keep up with demand.

CEO Dermot Guerin said: “This is an unprecedented situation and we feel privileged to play a part in the global response to ramp up production of life critical ventilators, respirators, and infusion pumps to assist our NHS frontline staff, and healthcare professionals worldwide.

“We are all humbled by their courage and dedication. Our team has been absolutely incredible and they’re working tirelessly to ensure we meet the ramp plans for these products that are so essential to patients in intensive care units and critical in the fight against Covid-19.”

Power Roll Limited, based at the Washington Business Centre, has donated 50 hazmat suits, which will be used by front-line workers.

The business has also handed over boxes of disposable gloves and high-spec face masks to ensure adult social care professionals in Sunderland are able to deliver support to residents and stay protected at work.

Managing director Neil Spann said: “This is a difficult time for all of us, but is a time where we need to come together as a community.”

Matrix Health Services, which has a team of specialist surgeons who provide NHS treatment to patients at centres throughout the northern region, has also pledged to donate a supply of masks, gloves and aprons to the council.

Allan Stirrat, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the firm, said: “Matrix Health is pleased to donate all of our masks, gloves, aprons and surgical gowns for the use of Sunderland’s healthcare workers.”

Sunderland City Council leader Coun Graeme Miller said: “We have some incredible businesses in Sunderland, and many of these are coming to the fore during these challenging times.

“We are determined to ensure we protect the most vulnerable people in this city as best as we can, and our team of social workers are absolutely steadfast in their commitment to get to those who need support.”
