Here’s some of the openings and developments we can look forward to in the city.

5. Elephant Tearooms, High Street West
The sympathetic restoration of the landmark Elephant Tearooms is due for completion in the coming weeks. The building is a grand example of Hindu Gothic style and is testament to Sunderland’s wealth in the late nineteenth century. As part of the scheme, the original Georgian shop front on Fawcett Street and the tearoom’s original Victorian shop front on High Street West are being replicated after being torn down years ago. Both will house commercial units on the ground floor, with the upper floors being used for mixed commercial use. Photo: National World

6. Elephant Rock, Roker
Work is underway on the transformation of the old shelter in Marine Walk, Roker. The Victorian shelter is being turned into a new beachfront bar called Elephant Rock. From the same team behind Vaux Brewery, it's set to open in time for the summer. Photo: Stu Norton

7. Rio opening, Low Row
Work is underway on a £450,000 refit of the former Halo site in Low Row which will open as Rio Brazilian steakhouse. The North East chain has built up a huge following thanks to its unlimited steak offering. It's set to open its doors in May. Photo: Stu Norton

8. Bridge Hotel Vaults, High Street West
The team at Vaux have also had their plans approved to convert the ground floor of the former Lambton House at the bottom end of High Street West back into a pub. They will also be reviving its old name of Bridge Hotel Vaults. It's set to open in 2024. Photo: Stu Norton
