Fourteen Nissan workers self-isolating after positive Covid-19 case confirmed at Sunderland plant

Fourteen Nissan staff members will now begin self-isolating after a worker tested positive for coronavirus.

The Wearside plant, which is one of the biggest employers in the region, confirmed on Tuesday, July 14, that one member of staff at the factory had tested positive for Covid-19.

After working closely with Public Health England, the car manufacturer has today (Wednesday, July 15) confirmed 14 members of staff have begun to self-isolate at home.

The member of staff who initially tested positive with coronavirus after taking ill is now recovering at home.

The company has confirmed production at the plant has not been affected due to the workers self-isolating.

A Nissan spokesman said on Wednesday: “The safety of the team is our top priority and we will continue to follow all public health guidelines.

“We have worked closely with Public Health England since the confirmed case at the plant. Following their advice, today a further fourteen members of our team will now begin a period of self-isolation.

“We remain in close contact with the team member who was initially taken ill, and who is now recovering at home.

“We have a thorough and comprehensive set of proactive safety measures in place to protect our staff, which we will continue to review in line with public health advice.”

Nissan closed factory doors in March in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The firm had carried out hundreds of hours of preparation to ensure the safe return of employees before the plant reopened on Monday, June 8.
