The scheme, to be called Lowry Park, will consist of 82 homes built on the eight acres off Lowry Road, a short distance from the seafront at Seaburn and the Morrisons supermarket.

The whole development is expected to create around 90 jobs and take three years to complete, although the first residents are expected to move in during 2021.

The company says it will also invest £600,000 to be put towards local education, a coastal warden contribution, the provision of open green spaces and a children’s play area.

The houses will sit beside two more of Sunderland’s new developments. Container village STACK Seaburn is due to open on the site of the old Seaburn Centre on August 28, while the £6 million Seaburn Inn is expected to open in spring 2021.

Jennifer Tupman, Avant’s North East regional director, said: “We are very pleased to have exchanged contracts on this landmark development for Seaburn and are now beginning to put the necessary steps in place to prepare for initial groundworks to start later in the year.

“Lowry Park will deliver high quality new build homes in a desirable seaside location and make a significant contribution to Sunderland City Council’s extensive regeneration plans for this coastal suburb.

“We are hugely excited to be part of this project and to bring our very latest range of homes to home buyers in the city.”

Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, added: “Seaburn is fast-changing into a vibrant seaside community with fantastic leisure facilities, with plans afoot for yet more investment that will improve historic buildings in Seaburn and Roker.

“It’s no surprise that more families are keen to make Sunderland in general, and Seaburn in particular, their home, and this new development will be another attractive addition to the city’s housing offer.”
