Washington-based Bridgewater Bacon is one of the first entries in the recently launched Sunderland Portfolio Awards and is a 2020 success story.

The nomination for the firm, which mainly supplies North East butchers, cafes, caterers, and bakers, said: “During the height of lockdown, sales on our retail website rose tenfold as we supplied hundreds of households across Wearside and the wider North East with meat that was in short supply in supermarkets due to the panic buying.

Managing director David Kiefer said: “People could not get out to the shops or they found that the shops had run out of meat.

"There were people who were frightened to go out because of the virus.”

He said some customers were in tears when they phoned to ask if Bridgewater Bacon could help them.
