Sunderland-based Maxim Brewery has built its reputation on salvaging legendary city beers such as Double Maxim brown ale as well as concocting award-winning new creations such as the dark Raspberry Porter.

Now it has unveiled 4.8 per cent-strong Maxim Pils lager, available in 330ml bottles, after listening to feedback from customers at its new lockdown takeaway service.

Brewery managing director Mark Anderson said: “It is something we have thought about in the past although we have never really had the time to experiment with it because of everything else we had on.

“Our other bottled beers have proved popular at the drive through and then more and more people were coming up and asking us if we had any lager they could buy.

“So because it was something we always wanted to do, and we had a little more time, we decided to bring it forward and hopefully give the customers what they want.”

Maxim Pils, made with Czech hops, is only available at the moment from the business’s popular takeaway service on Fridays and Saturdays.

The brewery, founded following the demises of the city’s Vaux Breweries in 1999, launched the drive through before Easter after losing around 70 per cent of its trade overnight when pubs nationwide closed just prior to the March 23 coronavirus lockdown.

Orders have to be placed and paid for in advance with beers placed on tables for motorists to collect while staff watch from a socially acceptable distance.

Mini casks and trays of eight-12 bottles are available by phoning the brewery from 9.30am on (0191) 5848844.

They can then be collected from Maxim’s back doors at 1 Gadwall Road, Rainton Bridge, near Houghton, on Fridays between 10am-3pm and Saturdays between 10am-2pm.
