The Poetic License Bar at the Roker Hotel posted over the weekend that an ‘external contractor’ working from 6pm to 11pm at the site on Friday, September 11, had tested positive for Covid-19, prompting it to temporarily closed.

It came shortly after Sunderland was placed on the Government’s watch list after a rise in cases in the city.

On Saturday, September 12, the bar said a team of deep cleaners and anti-viral ‘foggers’ were on site.

It said: "Fogging is used to clean and disinfect large spaces and rooms quickly and effectively against the COVID-19 virus. The chemical disinfectants used within the fog not only kills COVID-19 if it is present on surfaces, furniture, floors, walls and ceilings, but also works against airborne micro organisms.”

Now the bar has confirmed “all venues” at the hotel were reopened. Poetic License is one of a number of venues at the hotel, which also includes the Let There Be Crumbs tea room and cakery.

Posting on Sunday, September 13, it said on Facebook: “We’ve been in contact with Track & Trace and of course Health Protection last night and throughout the day, and after completing a full risk assessment we’ve now been given the go-ahead to re-open with no further action needed to be taken.

“If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, or indeed if you’re waiting on results from a test because you’ve had symptoms - Please do not leave the house. Pretty please don’t come to our venues.”

It added: “We’d like to thank all of our staff, customers and everyone working behind the scenes for their continued hard work and support, and hope to continue to go forward giving you a safe and enjoyable experience when you’re with us. Thank you all for being so lovely and understanding.”

The bar team asked customers returning to keep their distance from others, read the House Rules which are printed onto Roller Banners as they enter, check into its Track & Trace system using the QR codes shown, and use hand-sanitisation stations which are positioned at entrances, as well as inside.
