The Saltgrass in Deptford is celebrating the German festival on October 3 and 4, complete with two-pint steins and a free bratwurst with your entry ticket – as well as a glass stein to take home.

Benches and tables are available at The Anchor section of the pub, a partially-covered outdoor space which has been hosting a number of live events, as well as in a marquee which will be put up for the Bavarian festival.

Highlights of the weekend will include German music and a range of imported German beers. Lederhosen and dirndl traditional costume is also encouraged, but not mandatory.

Walter Veti took over the historic pub, which dates back to 1842, last year and has worked hard to bring back its live music scene. Many events, such as this weekend’s Freddie Mercury celebration, sold out a day after going on sale.

“The Saltgrass is really starting to get a name for itself for live events and it’s great to see,” said Walter.

Speaking about next month’s Oktoberfest, an annual festival in Munich which has become popular around the world, Walter said: “It’s a really fun celebration, but there’s nothing like this happening in this area. It’s even been cancelled in Germany, so we wanted to do something to mark the celebration.

"We use The Anchor for live events, but for this we’ll also be getting a marquee. Oktoberfests are usually held in them so it fits in with the theme.”

There’s a number of events lined up for The Saltgrass including house DJ, and one of the people credited for founding the UK’s rave /club scene, Danny Rampling, on Saturday, September 26.

In the meantime, local DJ Aaron Swales performs this Sunday, September 6.

*Oktoberfest tickets are £20 for one of the days only, which run from 2pm until midnight on October 3 and 4, and include a free bratwurst, free first drink and a stein to take home. They’re available to buy from Skiddle.com.
