The High Street giant closed all its stores nationwide after the onset of the pandemic in March.

A handful opened on a trial basis around three weeks ago to judge new social distancing measures.

More opened on Friday, May 15, with the Pallion Retail Park branch now one of 46 to have reopened nationwide.

It is only serving drive thru customers at the moment.

A company statement from chief executive Jill McDonald said: “We have also enhanced our hygiene procedures and adapted our operations, including contactless payment only and providing personal protective equipment for all team members.”

Costa Coffee follows other nationwide food and drink chains in gradually reopening.

Socially-distanced queues of pedestrians also formed outside Greggs’s bakery, near The Broadway, Sunderland, earlier this week after it reopened.
