New Sunderland Aldi set to open in June - store manager says branch will help community through challenging times

The supermarket giant is due to open its new branch in Pennywell on Thursday June 11, with doors opening at 8am.

It is one of a number of businesses moving in after development work began to create a new retail area for the city.

Food stores are among the few shops which have been able to stay open right through lockdown, and Aldi has not let difficulties during the crisis stand in the way of opening its new branch in Sunderland.

The new branch will be run by store manager Rikki Elliott, along with a team of 29 colleagues.

Aldi said the store in Chester Road was part of its “investment in local communities across the UK”, adding that the branch will bring eight job opportunities to the area and offer more customers access to its “high quality, low-price products”.

Mr Elliott said the new store will offer its popular range of products, including a ‘Food to Go’ section at the front of the store and its ‘legendary’ middle-aisle Specialbuys, with everything from electrical items to garden tools added on Thursdays and Sundays.

“We’re really looking forward to opening the new Aldi store here in Pennywell which will allow the local community to access the everyday essentials they need during this challenging time,” he said.

“It will be lovely to welcome customers to the new store and provide them with Aldi’s everyday amazing products.”

The new Aldi store is urging charities and food banks in the Pennywell area to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community.

Charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, up to five days a week.
