The team say as well as being a lasting legacy of the East Durham Creates project, the Arts Café is a new venue for the area and will host small exhibitions and performances.

Project director Malcolm Fallow explained: “The Arts Café will provide an additional element to the cultural Infrastructure of the area and will facilitate increased levels of engagement.

"We see it as a step towards breaking down barriers for local people who want to broaden their arts and cultural experiences.”

The venue will also tie in with the established, mainstream operations of East Durham Trust who have done much to alleviate poverty and disadvantage in the area in recent years.

Malcolm added: “East Durham people need every possible tool in the box when it comes to social and economic regeneration. Inequality is inequality whether we are talking at a financial level or with regard to access to culture.”
