The retailer has applied for permission to sell alcohol and hot food from a planned store in Murton up to midnight seven days a week.

According to papers lodged with Durham County Council, if approved, the scheme would permit booze from 6am every day.

Plans for a petrol station and supermarket to be added to the existing retail park were given the go-ahead by county planning chiefs in 2014.

The keys to the site were later handed to Morrisons as part of its £45million expansion plans into Murton.

Dalton Park, which in recent years has added a cinema, a pub and several restaurants, is currently shut due to restrictions in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Morrisons has been contacted for further comment.

Comments on the proposals can be submitted to Durham County Council until Monday, June 8.
