'It's been a nightmare': Owner of salon smashed into by BMW speaks as her business reopens in wake of collision

A business boss has spoken of the “nightmare” she had her team has faced after a BMW crashed into the front of her salon.

Glam Hair and Beauty was damaged just before noon on Bank Holiday Sunday, May 30, with the car missing a teenage girl by just seconds before it collided with the shutters of the closed shop.

It is the second time the salon has been damaged by a car, having been struck at its former premises further down Seaside Lane in Easington Colliery some years back.

In Sunday’s incident, the two men inside the BMW ran off leaving structural damage and a trail of metal and rubble in their wake, as well the wreckage of the car.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service was called in by Durham Constabulary to make the vehicle safe, with inquiries ongoing to trace the driver and his passenger.

Meanwhile, salon boss Lisa Turner and the six women who rely on it as their livelihood have been ensuring customers are still able to make their appointments – even if the front of the building is boarded up ahead of repairs.

Lisa, 45, has also had to help her son Kieran, 25, and partner Rebecca Edwards, 24, out of the flat above and into her home so that access can be gained to the shop around the back, as they are waiting to move into their new home.

Their first child is expected to arrive within days.

The incident has added to the stress for the Glam team, having faced much of the last year without being able to work due to the pandemic restrictions.

It was also fortunate the business was closed at the time, as it has been opening on Sundays following the lockdown.

Lisa, who has run the business for six years, said: “It’s been a nightmare.

"Someone gave me a phone call and I just thought ‘Not again’, I couldn’t believe it.

"It just missed a girl by seconds and when I got here, she was being helped by the firefighters for shock.

"It was lucky no one was in and that no one was hurt. It’s just bricks and mortar thankfully.”

A Durham Constabulary has asked anyone with information to call 101 quoting incident number 222 of May 30.
