Pictures from Sunderland city centre as customers hit the shops to #SupportLocal on reopening day

It’s been a busy day so far in Sunderland city centre as a number of non-essential shops reopened for business for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown was imposed.

Our reporter Fiona and photographer Frank headed out to meet with shoppers and chat to traders as many stores welcomed customers back for the first time since March. Check out our pictures from the first day back at the shops – and see if you can spot anyone you know!

Harry Collinson launched his jewellery & watch repair business in the city in 1981. His family have reopened their three stores, including Nomination & Pandora. He said: “It’s fantastic, I’m excited to be open again.” He’s been overwhelmed by the loyalty shown by customers. Photo: JPIMedia
