With essential shops the only retailers allowed to trade during the third lockdown, bosses at the Bridges shopping centre in Sunderland have set out which businesses will still be open to customers.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday night, January 4, that the country would enter another lockdown immediately as ministers try to get to grips with a surge in cases associated with the new variant of Covid-19.

The official Government guidance – published on its website – outlines which businesses are allowed to remain open and which must close.

Hospitality venues such as cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars and social clubs must also shut, with the exception of providing food and non-alcoholic drinks for takeaway (until 11pm), click-and-collect and drive-through.

Personal care facilities such as hair, beauty, tanning and nail salons, tattoo parlours and body and skin piercing services must also close. These services should not be provided in other people’s homes.

Businesses which can remain open include essential retail such as food shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, building merchants and suppliers of building products and off-licences and medical and dental services.
