Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday night, January 4, that the country would enter another lockdown immediately as ministers try to get to grips with a surge in cases associated with the new variant of Covid-19.
The official Government guidance – published on its website – outlines which businesses are allowed to remain open and which must close.
Non-essential shops – including clothing and homeware stores, tailors, tobacco and vape shops, electronic goods and mobile phone shops must close but are allowed to operate click-and-collect (where goods are pre-ordered and collected off the premises) and delivery services.

Hospitality venues such as cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars and social clubs must also shut, with the exception of providing food and non-alcoholic drinks for takeaway (until 11pm), click-and-collect and drive-through.
Personal care facilities such as hair, beauty, tanning and nail salons, tattoo parlours and body and skin piercing services must also close. These services should not be provided in other people’s homes.
Businesses which can remain open include essential retail such as food shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, building merchants and suppliers of building products and off-licences and medical and dental services.
Bosses at the Bridges shopping centre, who have brought in a range of safety measures, from hand sanitising stations to one-way systems for shoppers to follow, have confirmed which of its businesses will remain open.
