If you’re heading to the Sunderland Empire, here’s some of the best-placed restaurants in the city for pre-theatre dining that are all a stone’s throw away from the venue, or a couple of minutes walk. Places fill up fast, however, so it’s best to book ahead where possible.
13. Moti Raj, Church Lane
Possibly the city's longest-running restaurant after setting up shop in 1974, the Moti Raj is a city institution - with the perfect location for a pre-theatre balti or tandoori dish. It's a reliable option for a meal and is open 7 days a week from 5pm to 11pm.
14. Mexico 70, High Street West
For tacos and tequila, you can't get much better than at Mexico 70. Tuck into a range of fusion tacos, loaded fries and sides, with plenty of vegan options too. It's open Monday to Thursday from 5pm and Friday and Saturday from 12pm. You'll need to get in quick though as the restaurant will have its final service on Saturday, February 24.
15. Street Bar SR1, Low Row
For belly-busting portions of loaded fries, burgers, hot dogs, pizza and more, head to sports bar Street Bar on the corner of Low Row, which has transformed the former Revolution site. Upstairs is cocktail bar Victoria's Loft. No need to book.
