The past few months has seen a wave of new cafes and restaurants open around Sunderland – with more to come this year.
Here’s some of the new businesses that have opened recently and which are worth checking out.
9. Grinder Central, Hills Arts Centre, Waterloo Place
Grinder Central opened as part of the transformation of the old Hills bookshop in Waterloo Place into Hills Arts Centre last year. A sister site to Grinder, in Durham Road, it sells the same great coffee and even more cakes and lunch options. It's based on the ground floor and is fully accessible. Photo: Stu Norton
10. North, South Bents
North had a soft opening just before Christmas and is now offering its full menu of modern seafood and small plates. Brought to the city by the same team behind Mexico 70, it's housed in the transformed storage shelter in Seaburn promenade. It's open Wednesday to Saturdays from 3pm. Booking ahead is advised, check their socials for the link. Photo: Stu Norton
11. Diego's Joint, Sunniside
Named after owner Dan's doberman, Diego, Diego's Joint became the latest addition to Sunniside late last year. It specialises in a whole host of ethically-sourced craft ales, teas and coffees. The social enterprise also hosts events such as comedy nights. Photo: Stu Norton
12. The Front Parlour, Grange Terrace
The Front Parlour, in Grange Terrace, near Park Lane Interchange, will reopen under new management in February. Housed in an atmospheric Victorian building, expect treats such as Middle Eastern-style vegan wraps. Photo: National World
