It’s meant that many city businesses have been creative with their outdoor spaces, from converted car parks to pavement seating. Here’s some of the new al fresco hot spots to try out in Sunderland.
9. The Courtyard at The Looking Glass, Sunniside
A bit of a hidden gem in the city centre, The Courtyard at the back of the Looking Glass is a great secluded spot for an al fresco brunch and beers in the sun. It's open Thursdays to Sundays and there's no need to book. Photo: JPI Media
10. The Saltgrass, Deptford
In response to the pandemic, The Saltgrass has greatly extended its outdoor areas which can now hold up to 200 people. As well as outdoors drinks, there's a huge screen for watching the Euros. Photo: JPI Media
11. Marcello's, Albion Place, city centre

12. Paticake Patisserie, Tunstall Road
Pati Cake Patisserie sells some of the best cakes and scones in the city and now you can enjoy them al fresco. There's only a limited number of outdoor seats but enough to enjoy a much-needed catch up and a slice of cake with a friend. Photo: JPI Media
