From the huge new buildings taking shape as part of the £500m Riverside development to bringing old buildings back to life on the seafront, there’s plenty to look forward to in the city. Here’s a round up of some of the new additions coming soon.
9. Sunderland Train Station
It's full steam ahead for the new £26m Sunderland Train Station which is set to be a vastly improved entrance to the city than its predecessor. The improvements have been part-funded by the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund with an overall package of £16.3million. Network Rail will be overseeing the southern entrance works and completion is scheduled for 2024.
Demolition of the existing southern entrance will clear the way for the construction of a new building featuring a large glass wrap around design, and including a new ticket office and reception, public toilets, retail space and cafes, and comfortable waiting areas, as well as a new mezzanine level with office space for rail staff.
The council is drumming up support for a full makeover over the next six years, with plans for a reimagined northern entrance to create a statement building and gateway entrance to the Central Business District on High Street West. Photo: national world
10. New life for the old Seaburn tram shelter
Plans are in place to transform the old Victorian tram shelter in Seaburn. Blacks Corner, who've had great success in bringing new life to old buildings in East Boldon, are set to develop the site as part of the Seafront Regeneration Scheme. Photo: Tim Richardson
11. Rio Steakhouse, Sunniside
Rio Steakhouse is set to transform the old Frankie & Benny's, which closed its doors in 2019, towards the end of the year. There's been much anticipation about its eat all you can steak offering heading to the city. Photo: national world
12. A new arena, old Crowtree site
Earlier this year, plans were revealed for a 10,000 capacity arena on the old Crowtree site. The multi-purpose venue, on the site of the old Crowtree Leisure Centre, is set to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city every year and will feature a food hall, restaurants, a hotel and studios.
Sunderland City Council is working with a range of partners to deliver the project, including a UK based industry-leading operator, and more than £20million in funding for the project has also been sourced from the local authority and Government. Photo: national world
