If you’re wondering what’s afoot, here’s a round up of some of the major developments which are changing the city’s skyline.
9. Eye Infirmary relocation
The existing Eye Infirmary on Queen Alexandra Road will be relocated to a new £36m hospital on the Riverside development. It's the North East’s only dedicated eye hospital and one of very few specialist centres for ophthalmology care in the whole of the NHS.
The hospital trust’s chief executive has said the facility at the former Vaux site will be “a world-class eye hospital." The new Eye Hospital will be a centre of excellence for eye services, caring for patients from across the North East, Cumbria and beyond. According to documents, the facility will be able to accommodate up to 342 staff by 2030, 30 more than at present. Photo: submitted
10. Former JJB Sports building, High Street West
Work is forging ahead on the transformation of the former JJB Sports building in High Street West into new bar and nightclub The 3 Stories with a view to opening by the end of 2023.
The new name is in honour of the site’s three floors and its former life as The Three Crowns pub. Believed to date back to the 1780s, the building still retains some stunning original features including ornate glazed tiles on the Pann Lane side, a historic side alley which got its name from the salt-making industry which existed centuries ago.
Plans also include creating a rooftop bar on the third floor. Photo: National World
11. Holmeside multi-storey carpark
A multi-storey carpark is to be built on Holmeside, after the demolition of Sinatras and The Railway Club, as part of wider plans to transform the city's transport hub. It's set to offer 404 spaces over four levels with disabled bays, electric vehicle charging points and cycle parking, as well as sustainable features including photovoltaic panels and LED lamp technology.
