How to watch the World Cup in Sunderland: Pubs, bars and table reservations for the England v France quarter-final

The world’s largest football tournament is in full swing, and these are some of the places you can watch England’s quarter-final clash with France in Sunderland.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is making history this year as the tournament marks the first time the event takes place during the winter months.

Because of this, the traditional scenes of packed beer gardens are likely to be off limits throughout the month-long tournament with pubs and other venues offering alternatives like table bookings to ensure fans don’t miss out on the footballing action. With the Three Lions now in the knockout stages, where can England fans watch their team across Sunderland?

After getting through a tricky group including Iran, the USA and Wales and a round of 16 tie against Senegal, Gareth Southgate’s team will face France next in the quarter-finals. Kick off is at 7pm on Saturday, December 10.

Where can I watch the World Cup in Sunderland?

Never ones to miss a big event, a series of pub chains have released table booking systems to ensure fans can get a front row spot at pubs across Wearside.

The Great UK Pubs group are offering table reservations for a series of pubs and bars across the area.

The Chesters on Chester Road, Yates in the city centre and the Blue Bell in Fulwell are all offering tables. Other options for football fans across Sunderland include The Board Inn on Durham Road, The Washington Arms and Oasis in Washington. Tables can be booked by visiting the Great UK Pubs website.

Stack Seaburn are opening their site up to England fans as part of a partnership with beer company Budwiser. All England games are being shown on the site’s big screen with all tables across the site being designated as first come, first served by staff for the evening.

Pop Recs

Elsewhere, Pop Recs on High Street West have been hosting England watchalongs hosted by Frankie Francis and co-host of the Athletico Mince podcast Andy Dawson. Tickets cost £5 per person which includes a free drink. The venue has also said 5% of the bar takings will be donated to Human Rights Watch. Doors will be open half an hour before kick off due to a gig happening on the afternoon of the fixture.

Carnival House

Carnival House in Southwick will also be offering England fans the chance to watch the game on the big screen. The Kings Roads site showed the second two England group games and have said they will also be showing any further knockout fixtures the team may play in as well as the final on Sunday, December 18. Anyone who books a table with the community space will get a guaranteed space for the final.

The site is using its community-first status to offer a safe place for families to watch fixtures in a more laid back environment while still generating an atmosphere. Tickets cost £3 and can be bought online through the Carnival House website.

Elsewhere on High Street West, Sunderland Bowl are offering packages for England fans with all games being shown at the site. The two packages offer bowling and drinks deals and can be booked online.

Streetbar SR1

Elsewhere, the Streetbar sports bar on Low Row have also promised they will be showing every World Cup game from the opening day through until the final. No tickets or table reservations are required with the bar telling football fans they can just arrive on the day for any fixture.
