A knitted Captain Tom is among the hero bears that have taken residence in a Roker window to brighten people’s lockdown walks.

Lucie Webster, 26, has crafted bears depicting nurses, posties, supermarket workers, police and national treasure Captain Tom Moore, who’s touched the hearts of the nation raising millions for the NHS by doing laps of his garden.

She popped the bears in the window of her home in Horatio Street, Roker, and they’ve been causing quite a stir with people stopping to take photos on their permitted walks.

While the hero bears remain in the window, the Captain Tom bear, which his account has liked on Twitter, will be sent to him for his 100th birthday.

People keep stopping to look at them and have been commenting on social media because they seem to really like the bears,” explained Lucie. “People have been taking lots of photos and one lady even posted some wool through the letter box with a lovely note.”

Crochet has long been a hobby of Lucie’s after she was taught the skill by her late grandma Margaret Burlison.

Lucie said: “I usually just crochet for friends and family. I’d posted on Facebook about knitting little chicks to sit on cream eggs over Easter and ended up making 100. People started sending me patterns and I thought I’d have a go at making the figures and adding accessories.”
