Sunderland fans have been quick to have their say on social media.
On Twitter, Tom Fowdy posted: “Good news, but I refuse to get my hopes up until this is over the line because otherwise I trust nothing that comes out of the club right now.”
Ian Smith tweeted: “Hopefully this all gets sorted sooner rather than later and more importantly it's not out of the frying pan into the fire.”

Hide AdJohn Meikle tweeted: “Looks like we're headed for a white knuckle ride whether we like it or not. Whatever deal is eventually done I hope it's in the best interests of our magnificent club.”
Deggsytweets added: “Probably my cynicism kicking in but a period of exclusivity means it goes quiet day it may happen quickly but it drags on, look up the road for example.”
