5. Miles for Men, Seaton Carew, July 28
The Miles for Men and Walk for Women 5k Fun Run is back again for its 7th year, beginning at Seaton Carew Clock Tower and along the scenic seafront at Seaton Carew.
Entrants can be of all ages and all abilities; you can run, walk, jog, bring the dog, wear something funny, or your Sunday best, or put your fitness to the test. Everyone is welcome to attend and support those taking part, with plenty for the family to enjoy including live music, food stalls, entertainment and a fun fair. The event is dedicated in loving memory to Demi Leigh Day. Registration begins at 10am, with the race beginning at 1pm.

6. Paula Radcliffe and Ben Smith, Gala Theatre, Durham, July 27
The world’s greatest female marathon runner of all time will be joined by the man who ran 401 marathons in 401 days at Gala Theatre Durham on Saturday. Paula and Ben will be giving an insight into their unique approaches to the greatest of running challenges, 26.2 miles. Hear about their motivation, their training, their highs and lows and how it can help you tackle the most iconic of running distances. This is your chance to question two contrasting legends of distance running. The talk is taking place as part of the inaugural Durham City Run Festival.

7. Free music, South Marine Park, South Shields, until September 7
As part of the ongoing South Tyneside Festival, there’s a host of live free music taking place at South Marine Park bandstand on Saturdays from 2pm to 4pm. Performances begin this week and will run until September 7, except August 24. The first act to perform will be Rivelino. Entry is free.

8. The Bodyguard, Theatre Royal, Newcastle, until August 3
Alexandra Burke returns to Newcastle Theatre Royal as Rachel Marron in the award-winning blockbuster musical The Bodyguard playing until August 3. The X Factor winner Alexandra previously wowed Theatre Royal audiences when she previously performed the role to packed audiences during the musical’s run in 2015 and received praise for her performance as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act in 2017. Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar nominated Warner Bros. movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, The Bodyguard, the musical tells the story of former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker.
