Earlier this week, Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), which operates the Empire, announced it was suspending performances across its venues following the Government’s advice about social distancing.

It meant this week’s performances of Beautiful: The Carole King musical did not go ahead as planned.

Now, the Empire has announced it will be suspending all performances, as will all ATG UK venues, until Sunday, April 26, 2020.

In Sunderland, this means planned performances of Million Dollar Quartet and An Inspector Calls will not go ahead.

A spokesman for the Empire said: “It’s a difficult decision, which we know will impact our employees, partners and companies who have been incredible over the past few weeks.

“Yet we all agree that the health and safety of our communities is our priority, and we are working alongside industry bodies such as the Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre through these unprecedented times.

We will be working in chronological order, and are currently contacting customers for performances of the week ending 22nd March, 2020.

“Thank you for your support and understanding.”
