YOUNG theatre stars of the future are hoping to follow in the fancy footsteps of Billy Elliot.
Pupils from Stagecoach performing arts school, based at Sunderland High School, have been chosen to perform at the Billy Youth Theatre 2011 showcase at Sunderland Empire on May 21.
As one of only six groups from the region chosen to take part, Stagecoach students will perform excerpts from a shortened version of Billy Elliot the Musical which has been specially adapted for the event.
The Sunderland showcase is one of four staged throughout May and June to celebrate the wealth of talent in schools and youth groups around the country.
Following the showcases, a number of groups will be given the chance to perform at the Billy Youth Theatre West End gala at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London in July.
Angela Salkeld, principal for Stagecoach Sunderland and Newcastle, said: “To have our full cast perform at the Empire is truly an accomplishment. We hope the evening is a triumph for all the children in the region who are involved and are delighted to be a part of it.”
She added: “We are delighted to be involved with Billy Youth Theatre and are very excited about providing this fantastic opportunity for local groups to present their work at the North East’s biggest theatre.
“We’re committed to supporting young and aspiring local talent and this showcase is guaranteed to remind us all of the wealth of talent in the North.”
Tickets for the showcase are £18.50 from tel. 0844 847 2499 or website www.sunderlandempire.org.uk
