A TASTE of the Orient will transform the Sunderland Empire into a kaleidoscope of exotic sights and sounds this winter.
Award-winning producer Ellen Kent returns to Wearside in November with Madama Butterfly, starring Korean soprano Elena Dee and Japanese soprano Miki Mori.
This celebrated opera returns with exquisite sets, including a spectacular Japanese garden, and fabulous costumes including antique wedding kimonos from Japan designed by the renowned Ukrainian designer Nadia Shvets from the National Ukrainian opera of Kharkiv.
A host of international soloists will bring to life the classic Puccini opera upon which the hit West End musical Miss Saigon is based.
Music is provided by the esteemed Chisinau National Philharmonic orchestra.
Madama Butterfly is the heart-breaking story of the beautiful Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant, resulting in heart-rending drama.
Highlights of the performance include the melodic Humming Chorus, the moving aria One Fine Day and the unforgettable Love Duet.
Ellen Kent Said: “My operas have to be emotional and beautiful. Mine isn’t minimalist – it’s traditional opera with a sexy feel.”
This production will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.
