THE stage could be set for a fantastic double award win for a Sunderland theatre.
The Empire, in High Street West, has received two nominations for our What’s On Where awards. They were for the Contribution to Culture and Show/Performance of the Year categories.
One nomination praised the theatre for “providing a fabulous venue, creating the best atmosphere and welcome by local people for local people”.
It heralded the way the Empire had brought the best West End theatre performances to the North-East.
The second was for the theatre’s Lion King production, and said: “An awe-inspiring, jaw dropping, mesmerising experience for all ages.”
General manager Ben Phillips said: “We’re delighted to be nominated in both the Show/Performance of the Year and Contribution to Culture categories at the What’s On Where Awards.
“2014 was one of our most successful years to date, with shows such as the National Theatre’s War Horse, the hugely popular Jersey Boys, our pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and of course Disney’s The Lion King, all attracting audiences from across the North East.
“In the last year we’ve also undertaken a great deal of outreach and learning activities, working alongside our show producers and local partners. The First World War themed Sunderland War Horse Learning Sharing Event and Ballet? What’s That projects were particularly successful, and we’re so thankful to all of our partners who assisted in making them so special, and thrilled that our efforts have been recognised.”
The awards are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7, and aim to reward the elite in everything from restaurants to children’s venues, takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.
We want you to nominate your favourites in each of the categories listed on this page.
The deadline for entries is February 5. We will reveal the winners on February 26 in a glittering finale at the Best Western Roker Hotel. To nominate, fill out the form HERE.
